5 Local, Black-Owned Restaurants to Support in Milwaukee

February officially marks the start of Black History Month. And as a Black-owned travel agency, we’re all about supporting Black-owned businesses.

Not just in February. But always.

So today, I’m sharing five local, Black-owned Milwaukee restaurants to support on your next visit to Milwaukee.

Black-owned Milwaukee restaurants

HEAVEN’S TABLE BBQ

As a former Kansas City resident, my standards for BBQ are sky-high. And in full transparency, not many of Milwaukee’s BBQ restaurants have hit the mark.

I had just about lost all hope, when I stumbled upon Heaven’s Table BBQ inside the Milwaukee Crossroads Collective Food Hall. I missed out on the ribs, but the brisket and chicken more than exceeded my expectations.

ALEM ETHIOPIAN VILLAGE

Of all the Black-owned Milwaukee restaurants on this list, Alem is the restaurant that I keep in heavy rotation. The owners are friendly, and the food is jam-packed with flavor.

Never tried Ethiopian food? Alem is the perfect place to give it a go. My vegan and vegetarian friends rave about Alem’s lunch buffet, but I typically opt for dinner.

TWISTED PLANTS

Even as a long-time meat eater, I love a good vegan meal. And thankfully, Milwaukee has no shortage of vegan and vegetarian restaurant options.

Twisted plants is a local staple when it comes to vegan comfort food. My go-to order: the vegan burger and cauliflower bites. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch their food trailer around the city.

If not, you’ll need to head to Cudahy to visit their brick-and-mortar restaurant. And soon, you’ll be able to visit their East Side location as well.

FUNKY FRESH SPRING ROLLS

I discovered Funky Fresh Spring Rolls at a local farmer’s market in Milwaukee. I bought a few bags of their frozen spring rolls and that was all she wrote.

I typically opt for the brunch or buffalo chicken rolls, but I haven’t had a bad flavor yet! While you can find their frozen rolls in supermarkets around Milwaukee, make your way to the Sherman Phoenix to get them fresh from the counter.

GOODY GOURMETS

If you’re in search of something sweet, look no further than Goody Gourmets Popcorn. The triple mix is a staple for me around the holidays—whether I’m gifting it away or eating it myself.

Goody Gourmets has been a long-time Milwaukee staple. I’m talking over 15 years worth of popcorn making. And they just built a brand new brick-and-mortar in the Glendale neighborhood.
