This Denver Restaurant Helps Immigrant and Refugee Women Thrive
Denver is a city that offers a great food scene, an unparalleled number of craft breweries, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure.
If you're headed to Denver, you’ll want to set aside time to walk through Union Station, check out the art murals in the River North Art District (also known as “RiNo”), and do some thrift shopping on South Pearl Street.
But, at some point, you’re bound to get a little hungry. And when you do, be sure to add a stop at Comal Heritage Food Incubator to your list.
Today, I’m sharing what you should know about one of our favorite foodie finds: Comal Denver.
Table of Contents:
THE STORY
Comal Denver was started by Focus Points Family Resource Center in 2016. Focus Points is a local non-profit organization committed to helping low-income immigrant families.
And while Comal Denver serves up a ridiculously delicious lunch, the restaurant also serves as a training ground for immigrant and refugee women—who originate from countries like Mexico, El Salvador, Syria, Iraq, and Ethiopia.
The Comal Denver program lasts approximately 18 months. During that time, the participants learn the skills needed to work in a professional kitchen and eventually run their own business.
The best part? To date, the Comal Denver program has had over 34 participants, and at least four women have gone on to start their own business.
THE FOOD
Comal Denver may be a mission-driven business. But, the food absolutely still lives up to the hype.
The restaurant was even ranked as one of the New York Times’ 50 Best Restaurants in America. So it’s pretty clear they’re doing more than a few things right in the kitchen, too.
The restaurant serves up lunch on most weekdays, with the menu changing daily. And, lucky for you, the menu is as diverse as the Comal Denver participants.
During our last visit, I had two drool-worthy shrimp tacos. I can’t wait to see what’s on the menu during my next visit.
THE LOCATION
Comal Denver is located in the River North Art District (also known as “RiNo”) of Denver.
The restaurant is located in a business park, only a short distance away from the craft breweries and street art murals that make RiNo a must-see neighborhood in Denver.
Whether you get there by bike, on foot, or by car—Comal Denver should absolutely be on your list.
