5 Winter Trip Ideas to Start Planning ASAP

As a longtime Milwaukee resident, I can tell you that there are not many things better than a Milwaukee summer. It’s a beautiful yet fleeting time of year—and I want to be here to take it all in.

For that reason, I’m an offseason getaway type to my core. (You’ll be hard pressed to find me on a plane from late-June to mid-September.)

Sometimes I’m getting away from the harsh winter weather, other times I’m taking advantage of discounted flights to Europe.

And there is, in my opinion, no better offseason getaway than a wintry trip across the pond. So today, I’m sharing five of our best winter trip ideas that you should start planning right now.

LONDON

London is wonderful all year round, but in winter it quite literally shines. If you’ve ever taken a stroll down Oxford or Regent Street leading up to the holidays, you know exactly what I mean.

You can spend your day shopping the Christmas markets with mulled wine in hand, exploring the plethora of free museums in South Kensington, or even taking in a classic West End show (the U.K.’s Broadway equivalent).

No matter what you choose, you’ll be feeling right at home in London.

BAVARIA

Bavaria is a winter wonderland straight out of a fairytale. You’ll find snowy Alps perfect for skiing and charming medieval towns that are filled with magical Christmas markets to explore.

And if it gets too cold? Warm up with a stein of local beer or a hearty Bavarian meal—you’ll be back to normal in no time.

In short, Bavaria in winter is an experience that you won’t soon forget.

REYKJAVIK

Believe it or not, there really is no bad time to visit Reykjavik. But if the Northern Lights are on your bucket list, you’ll definitely want to plan for the winter months.

Beyond the Northern Lights, you’ll also be able to experience snowy glaciers and ice caves and then blissfully defrost in one of the country’s many geothermal pools. With its stunning natural beauty and endless winter activities, Iceland is unlike any of the other destinations on this list.

PARIS

I may love Paris most in winter. The crowds are gone and you can start to feel the true essence of this beautiful city.

Wander through enchanting Christmas markets. Cozy up with a cup of rich, velvety hot chocolate (or a glass of red wine) at a charming café. Marvel at the stunning holiday window displays on the Boulevard Haussmann, each more bright and beautiful than the last.

Paris in winter is something that you should absolutely experience at least once in your life.

AMSTERDAM

In winter, Amsterdam transforms into a beautiful winter wonderland. Much like Paris, the crowds have thinned and the streets are flooded with stunning sparkling lights.

Lace up your skates for a magical glide across one the city’s many ice rinks, like the one in front of the iconic Rijksmuseum. Stroll through the bustling Nine Streets district, where unique boutiques and cafes invite you to warm up with a hot coffee or a stroopwafel. And don’t miss the festive Christmas markets, where you can sip on mulled wine and shop for handcrafted gifts.

So, pack your scarf and some comfortable walking shoes for an unforgettable winter escape!
