How to Support Local Communities While Traveling
As I sit on the balcony of my Waikiki hotel, I cannot help but notice the constant flow of travelers going in and out of the McDonalds down the street. You would think we didn’t just see so many small businesses close their doors for the last time.
As travel continues to pick up, we have the opportunity to reimagine the way we travel.
At The Connect, we are seizing this opportunity. For us, the future of travel is about supporting local communities, being intentional, and more than anything, about doing good. We call this traveling for the city.
Today, I’m going to be sharing three simple tips to support local communities while traveling both domestically and abroad.
TRAVEL FOR THE CITY, EXPLAINED
Travel for the city is the practice of traveling in a way that benefits the city you are visiting and the people who call that city home. When you travel for the city, you are intentional about supporting the local economy and local communities.
WHY IT MATTERS
Local businesses are the lifeblood of a community. They create jobs in the community, which helps to decrease the unemployment rates and increases the standard of living in these communities.
Communities with a strong small business presence, have an increased median household income and create stronger social ties. Unlike nationwide chains, small businesses have a stronger connection to their communities and have a greater investment in its wellbeing.
SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITIES
Traveling for the city does not have to be difficult and can be done in a number of ways. At The Connect, we break it down into three main components: (1) stay local, (2) shop local, and (3) eat local. If you hit one of those three categories on your next trip, you’re on the right track.
Stay Local
Find a locally owned boutique hotel or bed and breakfast. These types of establishments tend to have a smaller number of rooms but offer a more intimate stay.
If you opt for an Airbnb, be sure to read through our tips before you book your stay.
Shop Local
Looking for souvenirs to bring back for our family and friends?
Instead of doing your shopping at your hotel gift shop, try to find local artists or makers to support in the community. Your souvenir is sure to be an upgrade from the generic shot glass or keychain.
A local farmer’s market or maker’s market is a good place to start. Be sure to check the calendar of events in the city you’re visiting.
Eat Local
When I travel, I travel for food. I love trying food from different cultures or just trying the local staples. Instead of sticking to your comfort zone, go out on a limb and try something new.
Who knows, you may discover a new favorite. It’s also my favorite way to support BIPOC owned businesses.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
As travel continues to pick up, join us in our commitment to travel for the city.
Now more than ever, it’s important to do your research. Look into the local shops and restaurants and try to support as many of them as you can. By doing so, you’ll get to experience a different part of the city. And if that means renting a car so that you can get out of Waikiki, do it.
In my experience, it’s always worth it.
Most importantly, don’t forget to spread the word. Traveling for the city is a team effort. Small changes to your travel habits can make a world of a difference to local communities.
